READ: How to Teach Kids Names and Attributes of Allah

Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise; and Allah is witr (one) and loves ‘the witr’ (i.e., odd numbers). [Bukhari]

The idea of memorization is knowing Allah – Your Creator – better. Because the more you know about Him, the more you’ll love Him and the more you’ll love Him, the more you’ll try to please and worship Him. Allah is Perfect in His Essence, His Names, His Attributes and His Actions, with no peer, equal or rival as mentioned in Surah Ikhlas.

Many scholars say that the names of Allah are not limited to this number (99). Religious writers from the essay editing service can be reached out to for the research of your essay. The Names of Allah mentioned in the Qur’aan and Sunnah number over one hundred, as several scholars have agreed (see Al-Qawaa’id al-Muthlaa fi Sifaat Allaahi wa Asmaa’ihi by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih ibn ‘Uthaymeen).

It means affirming the Names and Attributes which Allah has affirmed for Himself in a manner befitting His majesty:

1) without Tahrif (distortion of the meaning)

2) without Ta`til (negation of the meaning or function of Allah’s Attributes)

3) without Takyif (descriptive designation of Allah’s Attributes)

4) without Tamthil (likening Allah’s Attributes to those of His Creation)

“And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.” [Quran 7:180]

Major Misconceptions about Asma ul Husna

(derived from the book “Al-Qawāʾid al-Muthlá (Exemplary Principles Concerning the Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allāh)” by Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn) – (Read FREE ENGLISH PDF HERE)

1) Adding/Subtracting names in the list of Allah’s names without any authentic proof – for eg: names like Ar-Rashid, Al-Wajud (the Existent), Ad-Dahr (time) & Al-Wajid (One that gives existence to others) are not the names of Allah. Names of Allah are not affirmed by the intellect – they can only be affirmed by Revelation. We should accept what is narrated in the Qur’an and Sunnah and not add or subtract anything. Based on this, it is not correct to call Allah by any name other than those by which He has called Himself in His Book or those that His Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) called Him by in the saheeh ahaadeeth.

2) Using names of Allah that are not authenticated in Qur’an or ahadith as names of human beings with the prefix “ABD/ABDUL” (slave of ____ )).

3) Repeating one of the Names of Allah specific number of times to get one’s dua answered (without any proof from the Qur’an and Sunnah).

4) Deriving names for Allah from His attributes (Affirmed Attributes (Thubootiyyah) – Dhaatiyyah (Attributes of His Essence) and Fi’aliyyah (Attributes of His Actions)) – for eg: Whatever begins with “dhu” (possessor of) is not included in Allah’s names as they are considered Allah’s attributes.

Memorization of 99 Names of Allah

I have personally been using the Memorization Tracker from the Productivity Journal “I will in shaa Allah” (section: Tawheed in *Spiritual Development*) as shown below, but you can use various methods to test your knowledge in shaa Allah – for eg: quizzes from Islamic Online University, Creative Motivations etc.

Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned three levels of enumerating the names of Allah (Badaa’i’ al-Fawaa’id, 1/164):

1. The first level, to memorize their words.

2. The second level, to understand their meanings and implications.

3. The third level, to make du’aa (i.e., supplicate) to Allaah with them, this encompasses both supplication of worship and supplication of request.

Names of Allah Nasheed (without music – vocals only) by Hisham al Hadi

This nasheed is on the famous rhythm of 99 Names of Allah, but the disputed Names have been replaced with the ones mentioned in Sh.Uthaymeen list (referenced). The translation of names is in Urdu language, but I hope you can still benefit from the video in terms of memorization.

Here are some of the Video Lectures and resources that will help you understand the matter in more detail in shaa Allah:

Authentic List of 99 Names of Allah (اسماء الله الحسنى)

You can memorize and internalize them in any order you deem fit. Please find all the references embed inside the purple underlined font – for cross checking from Qur’an and Ahadith.

  1. Thanks you for your hard work. I was looking for a list of where i could find the 99 names in the Quran. i noticed that only 81 were listed with Ayyats and the rest were in Hadith. Are attributes 82-99 not found in the Quran?

    • Found the references in Sh.Uthaymeen’s list (his book is quite an extensive one) and then rechecked on our own (cross-checked before we published the post). Hence they are linked with references. Alhamdulillah for the work that has already been done by scholars of the past. We just need to make sure that the information we are getting is an authentic one (based on solid references).

        • These are simply the referenced ones from Sheikh Uthaymeen’s collected list. Scholars greatly differ on the authenticity of other Names. If you are able to clearly find their reference in the Quran and Sahih Ahadith (while they follow the rulings of how Allah’s Name is deduced in the first place), then take that as well sis. May Allah guide us to the right authentic knowledge only.

  2. What English book/s are the best for understanding the meanings of all the names and attributes of Allah?
Can you please share one that’s fully detailed and another that’s more brief/quick read?
    Jazakallah khair ♡

  3. Assalamoalikum sisters Ayeina.
JazakAllah khair kasreen for sharing Allah’s name in detail. I am so shocked to learn that some of the names we have grown up reading/watching aren’t authentic. My question like I grew up learning names starting from “Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem, Al-Malik” and so on. And the resources which you shared aren’t in this order starting from Al-Ahad. So we should learn in this sequence? And teach our kids the same?

    • walaikum assalam. I linked an audio here that fit these Names in that rhythm: https://ayeina.com/teach-kids-names-of-allah/ (also linked are some of the resources for kids that may be useful in shaa Allah). And I hear you, sis! I went through the same disbelief because they are so SO common (it almost felt like the authentic list must be the wrong one but after finding cross-references, I accepted – albeit the shock).
